UIC Advances With 20-Point Win Over Youngstown State

Four Flames reach double figures

MILWAUKEE - No. 3 seed University of Illinois-Chicago led 41-24 at halftime and never looked back en route to a 79-59 victory over No. 7 seed Youngstown State University in the second quarterfinal game of the Horizon League Men's Basketball Tournament here Friday (Mar. 7). UIC will now take a 21-7 record into Friday's semifinal versus No. 2 seed UW-Milwaukee. With the loss, Youngstown State ends its season with a 9-20 record.

Four different players reached double figures for the Flames, who never trailed in the contest. YSU did hang tough in the early going, tying the game at 12 on an Adam Bauman layup with 14:17 on the clock in the first half. However, UIC then went on a 17-0 run to grab a 29-12 lead with 7:41 remaining in the stanza. The Flames kept the lead in between the 14 to 17 point range the rest of the half and eventually went into the lockerroom with a 41-24 lead. UIC shot 50.0% in the first half and held YSU to 34.6% shooting.

Youngstown State could never make a run in the second half and could only get as close as 14, 47-33, when Andrew Jahnke drained a three-pointer with 16:56 left in the game. UIC then scored 18 of the next 22 points to take a 65-39 lead with 9:36 to go. The Flames were able to empty the bench as 12 different players dented the scoring column. Nine different players scored in double figures for the Penguins, who shot 51.7% in the second half.

Cedrick Banks paced UIC with 14 points while Armond Willaims and Aaron Carr added 13 apiece with Jonathan Schneiderman contributing 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting. The Flames hit 26-of-52 shots on the game and seven-of-11 from three-point land. Doug Underwood led all scorers with 20 points while Baumann notched 13 points and seven rebounds.
