Panthers To Face Notre Dame

UWM's first NCAA Tournament game Thursday in Indy

March 16, 2003

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will face Notre Dame Thursday in Indianapolis, Ind., in a first-round NCAA Tournament contest.

The full 65-team bracket was announced late this afternoon.

The Panthers (24-7) are making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. UWM gained an automatic berth into the field with a 69-52 win over Butler in the championship game of the Horizon League Tournament last week.

Game times will be announced later this week.

UWM received a 12th-seed while Notre Dame is the 5th-seed in the West Region. The other half of the bracket finds fourth-seeded Illinois, the Big 10 Tournament champion, facing 13th-seeded Western Kentucky, the winner of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

The Panthers have never faced Notre Dame, while UWM is 1-1 all-time against Western Kentucky and 1-3 all-time against Illinois.

UWM is 2-3 this season against other teams in the NCAA field (0-1 vs. Wisconsin, 0-1 vs. Southern Illinois, 2-1 vs. Butler), while Panther opponents UIC, Detroit, Valparaiso and SMS are expected to receive NIT bids later tonight.

Ticket information for the Panthers' NCAA Tournament game will be available beginning at 8 a.m. Monday by calling the UWM Ticket Office at 414-229-5886.
