Men's Track Finishes Fourth At League Meet

Wagoner named league's top newcomer for running events

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team finished fourth overall in the 2003 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championship, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon in the Klotsche Center. Gabe Wagoner was named the league's Newcomer of the Year for Running events to highlight the meet for the Panthers.

Wagoner finished third in the 800m, and anchored the men's 4x400m relay team that set a new Klotsche Center record. Wagoner's time in the 800m was 1:55.21, while he teamed with Adam Hobler, Nick Bruskewitz and Elliot Enright to finish the mile relay in 3:20.34.

Dan O'Leary also added a sixth-place finish in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 9.16. Adam Hobler and Eric Gresham each placed in both the 200m and the 400m, with Hobler third in the 200m in 22.78 and Gresham sixth in the same event in 23.85. In the 400m, Hobler claimed victory in 49.24, while Gresham was third in 49.89. Nick Bruskewitz added a second-place finish in the 1000m, finishing in 2:30.71. Andy Kivioja, Adam Swanson and Micah Hanthorn also placed in the 1000m, with Kivioja fourth in 2:32.32, Swanson fifth in 2:35.37 and Hanthorn sixth in 2:35.79. Josh Nygren also chipped in with a sixth-place finish in the men's 5000m, finishing in 15:08.3. The men's distance medley relay also finished fourth, with Enright, Swanson, Jeremy Dunn and Steve Saul finishing in 10:35.37.

 

 

Steve Capela finished sixth in the long jump after jumping 21'6 1/4" (6.56m). Sean Cludy joined in the points by placing second in the triple jump, measuring 45'10 3/4" (13.99m), while Nick Davis was fifth in the event after jumping 44'11 3/4" (13.71m). Scott Bambrough also placed in the triple, finishing with a best-effort of 43'8" (13.31m). Davis added a fourth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6'2 1/4" (1.89m), while Kyle Huebner won the pole vault, clearing 13'6".

Youngstown State collected the men's title, scoring 116 points. Loyola was second with 99, while Detroit finished third with 91 points. After Milwaukee in fourth with 85 points, Butler was fifth with 72 points and UIC was sixth with 55 points.

The Panthers will now compete next weekend in a last-chance qualifier to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. It is expected that a portion of the team will head to Iowa State, while others could go to Notre Dame for the weekend qualifier.
