Panthers Release Difficult 2008 Schedule6/19/2008 - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will play seven matches against NCAA Tournament teams and a total of 11 contests against squads that won at least 19 contests a season ago, according to the schedule released today by head coach Susie Johnson. In fact, two UWM opponents advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Volleyball Championships in 2007. The Panthers will open the season with three-straight matches against NCAA Tournament teams, as Ole Miss, Iowa State and Illinois State will visit the Klotsche Center for the Panther Invitational Aug. 29-30. The preseason slate also includes contests against NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier Michigan State, UCONN of the Big East and Oregon State of the Pac 10. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee honored present and former student-athletes and administrators Sunday afternoon at the annual Student-Athlete Awards Reception and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. The major award-winners included Steve Bode of men's soccer and Leanne Felsing of women's volleyball, who were honored as the Pepsi/UWM Athletes of the Year. Bode and Shannon Buttchen of the women's track and field team received the prestigious UWM Alumni Association Herman Kluge Awards. Felsing collected All-Midwest Region and honorable mention All-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches' Association following each of her final two seasons with the Panthers. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team hopes a solid spring of growth and improvement will turn into another championship campaign come the fall. The Panthers, who have won the last five Horizon League regular season titles, wrapped up their spring season with a good showing at the College Invitational in suburban Chicago this past weekend. At the event, UWM captured wins over DePaul and Marshall while pushing tournament runner-up Saint Louis, UCONN of the Big East and Iowa of the Big Ten to three games in the best-of-three format before falling.
